The statue of Guy the gorilla by William Timym was unveiled at London Zoo by Lord Zuckerman, President of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), on 10th November 1982. The sculpture shows the gorilla on all fours, his knuckles to the ground and his head turned to the right. The huge bronze sculpture, 11/4 (one and a quarter) life-size, weighs three quarters of a ton. William Timym had been a great admirer of Guy and had already made a half-size sculpture of Guy on commission for a Welsh client when an anonymous benefactor agreed to pay the cost of casting an even larger statue for ZSL. The Morris Singer Foundry devised a new method of scaling-up the original design in polystyrene. This was used as a base for a plasticine model of the gorilla which itself weighed over a ton.
