The British pianist Harriet Cohen (1895–1967) is depicted wearing a yellow dress and a dark stole. Facing forward, her hair is pulled back from her face. Harriet Cohen, who studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1909 and was noted in particular for her performances of Bach and modern English music, bequeathed her important collection of paintings to the Academy, to enhance the environment of students and professors. She was a friend and advocate of the composer Sir Arnold Bax, and she premièred Vaughan Williams's Piano Concerto – a work dedicated to her – in 1933. Following an injury to her right hand in 1948, she played one-handed until her retirement in 1960.
