Daumier painted this powerful study of a man's head around 1855. It is related to a composition of ‘The Family on the Barricades’, inspired by the 1848 Revolution which unseated Louis Philippe and led to the Second Republic. Daumier was a committed republican, and had been imprisoned in 1832 for producing a satirical lithograph of the King. This work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1914.
