Glyn Philpot moved to Paris in the early 1930s and his style changed from the conventions of Edwardian portrait painting. His colours lightened and, although his modern style lost him commissions, he produced some of his best work in the last five years of his life. Many of Philpot's paintings of people of African origin were based on a young Jamaican, Henry Thomas. He is the subject of this painting and was also the artist's lover.
