Henrietta Baillie was the daughter of a Scottish minister. After a ‘whirlwind courtship’, in 1835 she married William Hunter Baillie, who was the son of Dr Matthew Baillie, the renowned pathological anatomist and nephew of the famous physician William Hunter. William Hunter Baillie trained as a barrister but never practised, choosing instead the life of a gentleman of leisure and Squire of the Manor of Duntisbourne Abbots, Gloucestershire. William and Henrietta had eight children, five of whom, three sons and two daughters, died before William did, the other son surviving for just three months after William’s death. Henrietta died in 1856, William in 1894. The portrait was painted by Margaret Carpenter, born Margaret Sarah Geddes, a famous British painter of her time.
