Paul, Lord Methuen, was strongly influenced by the work of Walter Sickert – another artist who worked in Bath. For most of his career Methuen had a studio in London, but he also painted views of Bath. This house in St James Street South was one of Bath’s landmark buildings. Designed by William Killigrew and built in the early 18th century, it pre-dated the Georgian terraces for which Bath is famous.

This work dates from 1938. St James Street South survived the bombs which destroyed many nearby buildings. However, it, along with other nearby Georgian streets, was demolished in the post-war period.
