Howard Ferguson (1908–1999) is shown when elderly, seated in a brown leather armchair which has studded arms and a fabric back. He holds his glasses in his right hand, which rests on his lap. He wears clothing in shades of greens-greys, a pale green shirt, tie, pullover and suit, and the image is set against a green and brown background. A pianist and composer, Howard Ferguson's musical partnerships included those with eminent musicians such as pianist Denis Matthews and violinist Yfrah Neaman. He assisted Dame Myra Hess with the concerts at the National Gallery, London, during the Second World War, and taught at the Royal Academy of Music from 1948 to 1963. The artist, whose work includes portraits of other eminent British musicians, is the son of the composer Edmund Rubbra.
