The sitter accepted Honorary Membership of the Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh in 1949 and was elected Master from 1965 to November 1966. The portrait shows the Duke seated in the Master's Chair with the Company's mace on his right, wearing the robes and chain of the Master. The chain was presented by members of the Company in 1867 and the jewelled badge showing the Company's Arms was presented by the late Treasurer, Mr John Archer, in 1965 – the Duke was the first Master to wear it.
