Having joined the Army at the age of 15, Gough served initially at the Cape of Good Hope and the West Indies. In 1809, he was called to take part in the Peninsular War and, joining the army under Wellington, commanded his regiment. He was afterwards promoted Lieutenant to Colonel. In 1837, he was appointed to command a division of the Madras army in India; four years later he was sent to command the British troops in the First Opium War. After the conclusion of the war in 1842, Gough was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the forces in India where he saw action in the Anglo to Sikh Wars.
