Herring was a stage-coachman who turned animal painter. He drove the ‘High Flyer’ stage-coach between London and York for four years before devoting himself entirely to painting. For many years he worked in the Doncaster area, and painted 33 successive winners of the St Leger. Herring painted pictures for George IV and Queen Victoria. His son, John Frederick Herring the Younger worked in the same style. Imaum was a gift to Queen Victoria from the Imaum of Muscat. She gave the horse to the Clerk of the Royal Stables, who sold him at Tattersall's. Herring purchased the horse and used him as a carriage horse for his own household.
