'In the Hoy Hills' is a large oil painting made in response to one of the many visits the artist has made to Orkney. Muted in tone and form, the painting shows the majestic Hoy Hills in a mystical light.

Low's landscapes of the 1970s and 1980s contrast with her earlier work which was influenced by German Expressionism. Her work following the Second World War shows a robust handling of subjects with a social basis that has a parallel in the work of fellow Scottish artist Joan Eardley.
