The sitter was born in Glasgow and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1910 to 1911 and it was here that he met Hutchison, who was to be a lifelong friend. After a period travelling and serving in the First World War, he settled in London and made a name for himself as a portrait painter, painting important figures such as Neville Chamberlain and Elizabeth II, who was also painted by Hutchison. The sitter also painted a fine portrait of Hutchison in his RSA Presidential Robes which he exhibited at the 1953 RSA Annual Exhibition and which is now in the RSA collection. In 1927 he had exhibited another portrait of Hutchison, the same year that Hutchison painted Gunn's portrait. Although never a Member of the RSA, Gunn exhibited at the annual exhibitions from 1913 until 1957.
