The sitter is well known locally for his incredible knowledge of the German Occcupation. During the war, Joe was imprisoned by the Germans. After the war he became curator of the German Underground Hospital and has amassed a huge collection of photographs and other material relating to the Occupation. He is always happy to share his knowledge with others. Andrew Tift has exhibited many times in the BP Portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery and won third prize for his portrait of Tony Benn in 1999.
