The sitter was land agent and Steward to Earl Spencer and also worked for other estates in the area. He was the originator of the Farm Account Book, later known as the Brampton Farm Account Book, which was used for farm accounting up to the 1970s.

The portrait was presented to him by the Spencer tenants at a dinner on the 18th December 1868 at the George Hotel, Northampton. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year, no. 1, and described in 'The Times' as 'a keen, shrewd, yet kindly, hard-a-weather physiognomy, as of one who, for many a year, has set his face against the wind and open sky.'
