John Brown was Branwell Brontë's friend, and worked as a stonemason and as sexton of Haworth Parish Church. This portrait dates from the period when Branwell was a student of art in Bradford, as well as having his own portrait studio there. It is in the 'grand style', and probably his most successful use of it. The stormy background sky, in particular, demonstrates Branwell's increasing mastery of the style.
