The eldest son of William Barbour, he succeeded his father as chairman and managing director of William Barbour and Sons, and established the Linen Thread Company in 1898. As well as his successful expansion of the company to its position as one of the world's leading thread producers, John Doherty Barbour took a strong interest in the welfare of his workers. He also engaged in local and national civic life and served at various times as a local councillor, JP, High Sherriff and Deputy Lieutenant and as a Member of Parliament. Two carved wooden pews in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast are dedicated in memory of Barbour and his wife, Elizabeth L. Barbour.
