This memorial fountain to the slave-owner John Hosken Harper (1781–1865) was erected after his death in March 1865. His father-in-law, William Harper (1749–1815), was a major slave-trader out of Liverpool. The Harper family home, Davenham Lodge, was built in the late eighteenth century and was either rebuilt or significantly extended in c.1822 by John and his first wife, Ann Harper, the daughter of William, who died on the 26th February 1831 aged 45. This redevelopment was probably funded from his wife's inheritance and further improvements were made from the compensation that was awarded in 1836 for slaves (possibly inherited from his father-in-law) that he had owned in Montserrat. It has a square fountain canopy set in a triangular surround.
