Maurice Greiffenhagen was appointed as Professor of Life Classes, with responsibility for drawing, painting and composition, at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in 1906. He was also an illustrator and a well-respected portrait artist and having moved from London, Glasgow's artistic community provided Greiffenhagen with new opportunities and he remained on the staff of the GSA until 1928. The sitter in this painting was the respected Glasgow architect and partner in the firm of Honeyman and Keppie who, together with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, designed the GSA's new building.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
