Born and educated in Glasgow, John McVicar Anderson (1835–1915) moved to London and was articled to his uncle William Burn, a well-known country house architect. He set up his own practice in 1870 and although he was based in London, much of his work had links to Scotland. This included work for various large commercial buildings in the City for Scottish banks and companies and the Scottish church of St Columba, Pont Street, London (destroyed 1941). He was President of Royal Institute of British Architects 1891–1894.
