Born in Bath, John Stone spent his whole life here. He trained as a solicitor, and worked in the legal profession for many years. He was Bath’s Town Clerk for almost 30 years. This portrait was commissioned to celebrate and commemorate his contribution to public life. It hangs in the Council Chamber, alongside numerous portraits of Mayors, Councillors and other key figures in Bath’s history. Stanhope Forbes is best known for his ‘plein air’ paintings produced in Cornwall.
