Livingstone became the first elected Mayor of London in 2000, serving for two terms and was instrumental in London's appointment as the host city of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He also initiated an extensive upgrade of London's public transport system and was praised for his response to terrorist attacks in the city in 2005. Formerly a lab technician, Livingstone joined the Labour Party in 1969, serving as a local councillor from 1971. Between 1981 and 1986 he led the Greater London Council and was a staunch opponent of the Conservative Government, being dubbed 'Red Ken' by the press. As a Labour MP, Livingstone represented Brent East from 1987 until 2001.
