Scene inside a large kitchen. In the centre of the room a maid, kneeling on the tiled floor, moves to take a basket of fish from a young fish seller standing close by. Another woman, seated at a table with a young child, organises the activities, pointing at the fish which lie in disarray in the centre of the floor. A cat lies at the kneeling maid's feet, eying up at the fish before it. On the right, another maid appears to have her food in better order, with baskets of fruit and a tray of meat resting on large pots off the floor. She holds a large metal bucket in her right hand. More meat is hung from the ceiling above her. A large picture hangs over the fireplace in the background, with a single candlestick in the centre of the mantelpiece.
