Lady Essex (c.1652–1684) was the daughter of Robert Rich, 3rd Earl of Warwick. She married Daniel Finch (1647–1730) later Earl of Nottingham and Earl of Winchilsea. A celebrated beauty, a number of paintings of her by Lely and his studio survive. The most notable is Lely’s portrait, 1675, in the Huntington Gallery, San Marino, California. The pose was copied by Mary Beale and other artists. Of the 14 paintings by Mary Beale owned by Richard Jeffree, this is the only one of which he was uncertain of the attribution. It is also the one most influenced by Lely, and may be a ‘copy in little’ of one of his own portraits.
