The 'Lady in a White Dress' dates from 1906. It is one of a series of such figure studies painted by Peploe in the studio in York Place to which he moved in 1905. The sitter, called Peggy Macrae, was a popular model with many of Peploe’s Edinburgh contemporaries. The silvery tones of the picture’s fluid and creamy brush strokes derive in part from the artist’s studio, which Peploe had decorated with a grey and pink colour-scheme.
