Images of the Virgin Mary were incredibly popular in the medieval church. She was venerated as the mother of Christ and for the miracles of the immaculate conception and the virgin birth. Images of Mary mourning her dead son, Jesus, were known as Our Lady of Pity (Pietà) and deliberately attempted to create a strong emotional response from the viewer. The Virgin, wearing a voluminous mantle, is seated and holds the fringe of her hood with her left hand. The body of her son, unclothed save for a loin wrapping, lies across her knees. His head, still crowned with thorns, represented by a torse, is supported on her right forearm.
