The landscape, with thistles, is a view over the Kent weald, looking over Romney Marsh, near the village of Egerton in Kent. During the early ‘60s Jacqueline Stanley immersed herself in the post-war landscape of Kent. She moved from smog-filled London, with her husband Campbell Bruce (also a painter) and young family to Egerton House, in Egerton, Kent. They shared the house with other artists, such as the painter, John Titchell and later Fred Cuming. Egerton House became the hub for many artists involved in painting the Kentish landscape and Sussex coastline of that period, Including Carel Weight, Jack Millar, Pamela Izzard, and Alfred Daniels. Stanley periodically returned to paint the landscape of Kent up until 1973.
