Although there are rocks near Dale Abbey, and there was possibly a pool as well in the past, it seems that Wright composed this view c.1785 with a great measure of artistic licence. He used a similar composition for other landscapes of the 1780's. It has been suggested that the view might be based on that of Anchor Church, Derbyshire, looking toward the River Trent (Thomas Smith painted that famous beauty spot in 1745). Dale Abbey is actually situated approximately 15 miles north-east of Anchor Church.
