Julian Cooper, one of Cumbria's leading artists, is one of the most original and thought-provoking mountain painters. This painting is based on the old slate quarry at Honister Crag in the Lake District and is monumental in scale. Through it Cooper attempts to convey the sense of awe we associate with seeing mountains. It was painted in the studio from small studies, made on the spot over a period of time, and from photographs and memory.
