Samuel Prout was born in Plymouth and moved to London as a young man to study. In 1802–1804 he was commissioned to provide drawings for John Britton's book 'The Beauties of England and Wales'. He settled in Stockwell for a while, where he taught and later published his own book 'The Rudiments of Landscape in Progressive Studies' and followed this with several more teaching publications. In 1819 he visited the continent and was in his element painting street scenes in various towns throughout France and then later in Venice. His work was very popular and was highly praised by Ruskin in 'Modern Painters'.
