The German battleship 'Bismarck' was one of the most feared warships of the Second World War. When it made its way into the Atlantic Ocean it was trailed by Royal Navy warships and attacked, on the night of 24/25 May 1941, by Fairey Swordfish aircraft from HMS 'Victorious'. The painting shows the aircraft taking off on their mission (in rapidly deteriorating weather conditions), during which 'Bismarck' was damaged by a torpedo.
