The island of Roan/Eilean nan Ron (Island of the Seal) in the Pentland Firth was once populated at its peak with a community of 70 people who used boats to fish, allowing the island to become self-sufficient. With changing times and more opportunities available on the mainland, the community slowly declined until the final evacuation of the island in 1938.
