Spencer Gore came to Letchworth in 1912 for four months, staying with his long time friend Harold Gilman. During this time he painted at least 23 oils of the new Garden City. Most of these paintings are in museums across the country or belong to the Gore family. The painting 'Icknield Way' can be seen at The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia. Spencer Gore was one of the founder members of the Camden Town Group, and was elected as the group's first president in 1911. Gore was influenced by the Impressionists, developing an almost cubist style with flat geometric blocks of bright colour. This painting shows two or three typical Garden City houses to the right with prominent red roofs and a stylised sky in shades of blue, white and violet.
