William Middleton joined The Black Watch as Ensign in 1803. He was wounded at the Battle of Corunna on 16th January 1809. At the Battle, under Sir John Moore, the British retreated across northern Spain following the defeat of the Spanish and their allies in the Peninsula Campaign, and attempted to embark on ships and return to England. By 1835 he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 42nd Regiment. He retired in 1839 and died at Woolwich in 1843 as Barrack Master.
