When we look at a portrait we meet another human being. The best portraits make us want to know that person better, to discover their passions, to sense their sorrow, to share their jokes. That is the encounter that I paint. A silent encounter yet one in which every feature, every gesture and mannerism speaks loudly. A portrait is like a translation. My role as the artist is to observe, to analyse, to understand as much as possible of my subject, always in his or her context initially, and then to share that unique sensation, the complex dialogue between sitter and painter, through the language of paint.' – Vincent Yorke, Artist.
