The paddle steamer 'Lucy Ashton' was built in 1888, by T. B. Seath & Co., Rutherglen, for the North British Steam Packet Co. for service on the Craigendoran-Holy Loch run. The vessel was sold in 1949 and its hull purchased in 1950 by the Shipbuilders Association for experimental purposes.
