This may be one of the first primitive Italian paintings to be brought to England. On the reverse, besides the signs that is was sold at Christie's, it bears the initials 'J. B.'. John Bernard was a late eighteenth-century collector who was the first to bring over Tuscan primitives. The saints on the left may be Saint Bernardino of Siena, a Franciscan friar and martyr, and on the right, Saint Louis of Toulouse who was popular in Italy, and Saint Catherine of Siena. The Madonna's face is expressionless as befits a face still under Byzantine influence. The infant, however, is more lively and even adult as described in the apocryphal gospels.
