This half-length portrait of Fitzclarence, depicted in the robes of peer of the realm, must have been painted in 1831, or soon after, when he became a peer and also became Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He was the illegitimate son of William IV and Mrs Jordan. At the age of 15 he served in Spain and later in India. For the last 13 years of his life he travelled extensively on the continent collecting material for a military history of Islam. He committed suicide in 1842.
