After initial service with the 7th Bengal Native Infantry and as aide-de-camp to Major-General James Morris, Cunningham was appointed to command the 2nd Rohilla Cavalry when it was raised on 26 July 1815. He fought with this regiment in the Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh, India) insurrection of 1816, as a result of which his health suffered, and he was later awarded an additional pension in respect of this service. He retired in 1821 and became an Especial Judge in Mauritius, where he died in 1838.

The Rohillas were a tough, tribal, Muslim people originally from Afghanistan. They lived by breeding and trading horses. Well-suited to frontier fighting, they were recruited by the British into the Rohilla Cavalry and other irregular cavalry regiments which served in Bengal.
