Peter Howson was born in London and moved to Scotland in 1962. Many of his paintings draw inspiration from the streets of Glasgow where he studied at the School of Art. He is renowned for his portrayals of homeless people and working class macho culture, featuring bold, powerful, almost grotesque figures.

In 1993 Howson was appointed as the Official British War Artist for Bosnia, where he recorded the horror of the bloody conflict. Today he is established as one of the leading figurative painters of his generation.
