This was formerly considered to be a portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria (1609–1669). Sir Walter Scott, exceptionally interested in the Stuart Kings and Queens, firmly believed it was, and states in a letter of 1822 that he was in the process of hanging 'a full length of Henrietta Maria reduced from Vandyke which used to be in the drawing room at Abbotsford.'
