Marie Leszczynska (1703–1768), the daughter of Stanislaus Leszczynski, duc de Lorraine and former King of Poland, married Louis XV of France in 1725 (cf. Louis-Michel Van Loo P477) by whom she had ten children. She was noted for her homely pious nature, which Nattier brilliantly conveyed in a portrait of 1748, of which The Wallace Collection picture is a reduced eighteenth-century copy (original, Versailles, Château). The Queen asked the artist to portray her in habit de ville (day dress), and the resulting image, which shows her turning from her reading of the Bible, heralded a new naturalism in French portraiture in the eighteenth century (cf. Nattier P453). The picture became the best-loved image of the Queen; it was engraved by Jacques-Nicolas Tardieu in 1755 and numerous copies were produced by the copyists of the cabinet du roi at Versailles.
