This symbolic painting depicts several emblems of the Masonic Knights Templar, including a paschal lamb, a cockerel, an hourglass and a skull with crossed bones. These emblems are not uniquely Masonic and are often used more generally to signify mortality. Some also relate to the biblical account of Christ’s crucifixion, such as the cockerel, which crowed when Christ was betrayed three times by Saint Peter. In the top half of the painting, to the left, is Christ and to the right is Saint Peter. The Latin motto ‘In hoc signes vinces’ translates as: ‘In this sign, victory’ – the sign being the Cross.
