The figure of a girl is seated on a wall. To the right, a lamb rests its forelegs on her knee and the girl places her left hand on the shoulder of the lamb. This drawing is a study of a ceiling painting in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio of the Doge’s Palace, Venice, and is an allegory of meekness. In Christian iconography the lamb symbolises innocence, gentleness, peace and patience under suffering. In this way, it typifies the gentle qualities associated with Jesus, the Lamb of God. Probably made in Veronese’s studio, this drawing is likely to be a record of the artist’s composition made by an apprentice or student, rather than a study by Veronese himself.
