inscribed front plinth: IN MEMORY OF / WILLIAM SON OF WILLIAM NICHOLSON AND HANNAH HIS WIFE / THE SWEETNESS OF HIS DISPOSITION THE WARMTH OF HIS AFFECTION AND THE GENTLENESS OF HIS MANNERS / ENDEARED HIM TO HIS DOMESTIC CIRCLE AND GAVE PROMISE OF AN ACTIVE AND USEFUL MANHOOD / HE DIED ON THE 14TH DAY OF DECEMBER 1820 AGED 16 YEARS / ALSO OF CHRISTOPHER A BROTHER NOT ONLY IN NAME BUT VIRTUES TO THE ABOVE / HE DIED THE 8TH DAY OF MARCH 1829 AGED 14 YEARS / ALSO OF HANNAH CATHERINE / UNAFFECTED CHEERFULNESS ENLARGED BENEVOLENCE FILIAL AFFECTION AND UNOSTENTATIOUS PIETY / WERE THE ORNAMENTS OF HER MEEK AND QUIET SPIRIT / SHE DIED 27 AUGUST 1831 AGED 28 YEARS / ALSO OF RALPH DIED 1808. JOHN RALPH 1809. AND ELIZA 1815. ALL IN INFANCY / STRANGER IF OUGHT OF VIRTUE GOODNESS SENSE / YOUTHS FAIREST GIFTS AND FILIAL EXCELLENCE / FIND IN THEM BEST AND READ NOT TO GLEAN EXAMPLE FROM THE DEAD / SHORT WAS THE WAY THESE YOUTHFUL PILGRIMS TROD. BUT EARLY IS NOT LOITERERS ON THE ROAD / THEY SPED THEIR COURSE AND PARTNERS THROUGH THE TOMB / ATTAINED A BRIGHTER WORLD AND A HEAVENLY HOME. / THIS MONUMENT WAS RAISED BY THEY AFFLICTED PARENTS / AS A FOND BUT INADEQUATE MEMORIAL OF THE BEREAVEMENT AND AFFECTION / ALSO IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM NICHOLSON / LIEUTENANT COLONEL OF THE LANCASHIRE LOCAL MILITIA MANY YEARS A JUSTICE OF THIS BOROUGH / AND ONE OF THE SENIOR DEPUTY LIEUTENANTS OF THE COUNTY OF LANCASHIRE ' THE GENTLEMAN THE FATHER THE HUSBAND THE FRIEND THE CHRISTIAN HE SHONE ALIKE IN ALL' / AND DIED THE 24TH OF JUNE 1832 AGED 58 YEARS / LEAVING BEHIND HIM A NAME WITHOUT REPROACH AND A MEMORY ENDEARED TO ALL WHO KNEW HIM.
