This is a head and shoulders portrait of Michael Barstow, mercer (later merchant adventurer) and benefactor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers. He gave 40 shillings per year to the use of the poor widows, 15 shillings of which were for a house in Micklegate. He is depicted resting on a ledge with a book in his left hand. He wears a black skull cap, and a white flat collar. The broad cuffs of his brown coat can be seen through his black gown.
