This painting is a particularly good example of Lamorna Birch's love of the landscape around the Lamorna cove and his brilliant rendition of natural lighting effects on the water. Lamorna Birch was the son of a painter and decorator who, apart from 11 months studying in Paris in 1895, was entirely self-taught. He was one of the first 'second generation' of artists to come to Cornwall and he helped to form a Lamorna colony of artists. He initially took up lodgings at Boleigh Farm at the head of the Lamorna valley, not far from Newlyn. He took the nick name 'Lamorna' at the suggestion of Stanhope Forbes, to distinguish himself from another artist called Lionel Birch who painted in Newlyn.
