In 1911 when the Standard Motor Co.’s founder, Reginald Maudslay, was in disagreement with his business partner, a number of Coventry’s well-known figures came to his rescue and helped him buy the necessary shares to take full control. One such notable was C. J. Band, a Coventry solicitor. Band would go on to be an influential character in Standard’s business affairs and succeeded Maudslay as Chairman in 1934. He remained as Chairman until 1953 and served on the Board into his eighties. This portrait came from the boardroom of Standard’s headquarters in Canley, Coventry, which was known as The Ivy Cottage. Scottish portrait artist Cowan Dobson captured many fashionable sitters in oils and has been widely exhibited.
