Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), was an author, poet, natural scientist and journalist. His uncle was the artist Edward Burne-Jones and his cousin was Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

He worked for the Imperial War Graves Commission after the War, and he is recognised for his contribution to science – both a crater on Mercury and an extinct species of crocodile are named after him.
