This is part of a group of five portraits of the Davis family, all painted by Thomas Beach. Three date from the 1780s, and show Mr and Mrs Davis and their daughter Jenny. This portrait shows the second Mrs Davis, and dates from 1796. Presumably, the portrait of the first, long dead, Mrs Davis hung in the family home, and the second Mrs Davis felt it important that her own portrait join it on the wall!

The two wives are portrayed very differently; the first wife in a formal gown, with elaborately swept back hair, the second wife in a softer, but much more fashionable cotton gown, with casually tumbling curls framing her face.
