Baronzio, one of the outstanding early painters from Rimini, was influenced by the Florentine artist Giotto, who worked in the city. The flatness of the paint and the lack of perspective are reminiscent of Byzantine art, and the painting was at one time thought to be by Cimabue. At the bottom of the composition, Joseph looks on as midwives bathe Christ. This episode is not found in the Bible. It is used here to balance the emphasis on Christ’s divinity with a reminder of his human childhood.
